Hosta 'Blue Moon' — A Compact Blue Tardiana for the Shade Garden

Description

A Shimmering Lapis Border for the Woodland Edge

A masterpiece of mid-century breeding, Hosta 'Blue Moon' is the diminutive "baby" of Eric Smith's legendary crosses between H. 'Tardiflora' and H. sieboldiana 'Elegans'. Registered in 1976 by Paul Aden, this Tardiana (TF2x2) selection is a hallmark for the shady rock garden or as a sophisticated groundcover. Its low, somewhat flattened habit makes it a reliable choice for Canadian gardeners from the windy Maritimes to the foothills of the Rockies, providing a tidy and pest-resistant mound that looks stunning when used to border a shaded pathway.

  • Intense Cobalt Cupping: The small, heart-shaped leaves are remarkably thick and deeply cupped, holding a rich blue tone that serves as a cool anchor in the garden.
  • Distinctly Corrugated Texture: For a plant of its size, it boasts an impressive 10–12 vein pairs, creating a heavily textured, rugged look that belies its small stature.
  • Bright Summer Contrast: In July and August, the deep sapphire foliage is topped with near-white flowers, providing a brilliant flicker of light in the midsummer shade.
  • Resilient and Tidy Habit: A neat little plant with leaves that tend to lay flat in a dense clump, offering a structural pinnacle of form for the front of the border.
