Description

A Radiant Celestial Gem for the Shade

Expertly introduced by Jan van den Top, Hosta 'Bright Star' is a striking pinnacle of modern variegation, discovered as a spectacular tetraploid sport of Hosta 'Dark Star'. This mid-sized cultivar serves as a luminous hallmark for the shade garden, bringing a sharp, clean contrast to those dim corners under the canopy. From the breezy gardens of the Maritimes to the shaded suburban landscapes of Quebec, its intense colour and architectural form make it a reliable standout that holds its brilliance throughout our northern summers.

Why It Stands Out

Vibrant Bicolour Contrast: The thick, narrowly ovate leaves feature a rich blue-green core framed by a wide, dramatic margin that emerges a deep buttery yellow and gradually matures to a crisp, creamy white.
Exceptional Leaf Substance: As a tetraploid variety, the foliage is significantly thicker than that of its parentage, providing outstanding slug resistance and a clean, durable appearance throughout the season.
Upright Architectural Habit: Reaching about 36 cm in height, the leaves are held in an upright to outwardly spreading rosette, creating a tidy and elegant mounded silhouette.
Lavender Summer Sparkle: In mid-to-late summer, strong, upright scapes rise above the foliar plane to display clusters of light purple to lavender flowers, known to attract hummingbirds.

Technical Specs

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	35.6 cm × 61.0 cm (14″ × 24″)
Hardiness Zone	Canadian Zones 3–9
Colour	Blue-green with yellow-to-white margins

Grower's Tip

To see the full brilliance of this plant, site Hosta 'Bright Star' where it can receive gentle morning sunlight — this helps the wide margins transition more quickly to bright white, while afternoon shade protects its thick, waxy leaves. Because we are committed to our True to Type mandate, we observe these variegated gems in our Bécancour trial beds to verify their colour stability and vigour before we ever clear a division for your garden.
