Description

A Bold and Lustrous Anchor for the Shaded Landscape

Ron Livingston introduced Hosta 'Broad Band' as a large variegated cultivar true to its name. Each leaf is framed by an exceptionally wide yellow border that matures to a soft creamy-gold. The deep forest-green centre has a slightly glossy finish that holds its contrast from spring through autumn. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Use it as a dominant anchor in large shaded beds where its 117 cm spread fills space with authority.

Expansive Gilded Margins: Each leaf is framed by an exceptionally wide, radiant yellow border that gradually matures to a soft creamy-gold, providing a luminous halo effect in the shadows.
Rich Verdant Core: The heart of the leaf is a deep forest green with a slightly glossy finish, creating a dramatic bicolour contrast that remains vibrant from spring through autumn.
Massive Architectural Form: With a sprawling 117 cm (46") width, this variety forms a dense, symmetrical mound of heavy-substance foliage that effectively suppresses weeds and fills large gaps.
Elegant Summer Spires: In midsummer, sturdy scapes rise well above the variegated canopy to display clusters of pale lavender, bell-shaped flowers that attract local pollinators.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	58 cm × 117 cm (23" × 46")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Deep green with wide yellow-to-gold margins
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: Because of its impressive 117 cm (46") spread, give 'Broad Band' plenty of room to breathe — it will eventually become the dominant anchor of the garden bed. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we strictly adhere to our True to Type mandate, monitoring these divisions in our trial fields to ensure Livingston's signature marginal variegation remains consistently broad and stable before they are cleared for your garden.
