A Golden Tribute to Heritage and Resilience

Hosta 'Gaelic Roots' is a luminous Hosta Choice Gardens introduction hybridized by Bruce Cumpson from his renowned breeding programme in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Cumpson developed it as a third-generation seedling of H. 'Tsugaru Komachi', and in a gesture of community spirit, donated it to become the Official Plant of Southwest Middlesex, Ontario — named to honour the rich Gaelic heritage of the region's founding settlers. The leaves emerge a brilliant sun-kissed yellow in spring before maturing into a warm chartreuse through the season, with striking mahogany petioles and scapes providing dramatic contrast throughout. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9.

Mahogany Stems: Striking mahogany-toned petioles and flower scapes provide a dramatic earthbound contrast to the glowing yellow-chartreuse foliage — a signature trait unlike any other medium hosta.
Seasonal Colour Shift: Leaves emerge brilliant yellow in spring and mature into a warm, sophisticated chartreuse — two distinct looks in a single season.
Habit: Perfectly rounded medium mound with a tidy, stately presence that anchors a border with quiet confidence.
Flowers: Pale lavender blooms with striped scapes in midsummer, the mahogany scape colour adding an extra layer of ornamental interest.
Size: 40 cm (16") tall × 80 cm (31") wide.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	40 cm × 80 cm (16" × 31")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Bright yellow to chartreuse; mahogany petioles
Light Requirements	Partial shade; morning sun enhances yellow tones

Grower's Tip: 'Gaelic Roots' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and morning sun deepens the spring yellow beautifully — site it where the mahogany stems are visible against a backdrop of deep green or blue hostas for maximum impact. We ship this cultivar to gardeners across Ontario and beyond, from Windsor to Ottawa, where its cultural connection to Southwest Middlesex resonates with pride. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we wait until the signature stem pigmentation and yellow-to-chartreuse transition are fully evident before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Bruce Cumpson selection.
