Description

The Rebel of the Shade Garden

Hosta 'Generation X' is a bold and unconventional large-stature cultivar from originator Rick Goodenough. Goodenough created it as a stunning departure from the expected — solid blue, heavily corrugated leaves with a distinctly contorted, unruly form that stands upright rather than arching outward like most large hostas. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9 and grows to an impressive 53 cm (21") tall by 120 cm (47") wide. Plant it where its rebellious upright silhouette can make an unmistakable statement in the shade border.

Form: Contorted, unruly, and upright — a genuinely unusual habit that sets it apart from every other large blue hosta in the garden.
Corrugation: Heavily rugose, corrugated leaves with a bold, sculptural texture that deepens and intensifies as the clump matures.
Colour: Rich solid blue foliage with the cool, glaucous depth characteristic of the finest blue hostas.
Flowers: Elegant lavender blooms in June, rising above the bold corrugated canopy for a soft seasonal contrast.
Size: 53 cm (21") tall × 120 cm (47") wide — a large, commanding presence in the landscape.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	53 cm × 120 cm (21" × 47")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Solid blue
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Generation X' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and its upright contorted form becomes more dramatic with each passing season as the clump fills out. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we verify the signature rugose texture and distinctive upright habit before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Rick Goodenough selection.
