Description

A Rare Giant from the Originator's Own Plant

Hosta 'Gray Wolf' is an exceptionally rare large-stature cultivar from hybridizers Monty and Julie Carlson. The Carlsons registered it in 2013, and it remains one of the most difficult cultivars to source in Canada. The round, heavily corrugated leaves carry a striking blue-green hue with a glaucous bloom on top that deepens the cool, steely colour through the season. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9 and commands attention as a bold centrepiece in any shaded landscape. Divisions available here are taken directly from our display plant, which traces its lineage to the Carlsons' originator plant.

Corrugation: Round, heavily corrugated and cupped leaves with a folded, semi-upright habit that creates dramatic light and shadow across the surface.
Colour: Blue-green foliage with a heavy glaucous bloom on top — the steely, cool tone holds well through the heat of a Canadian summer.
Size: 76 cm (30") tall × 152 cm (60") wide — a commanding landscape giant that fills a large space with presence.
Flowers: Beautiful tubular blooms from mid-July through August on tall scapes above the corrugated canopy.
Rarity: Extremely rare in Canadian commerce — seldom available outside of specialist collections.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy coast to coast across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	76 cm × 152 cm (30" × 60")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Blue-green with glaucous bloom
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Gray Wolf' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 — its thick, heavily corrugated leaves are built for our climate. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, the divisions we offer come directly from our own display plant, which we grew from Originator's Stock sourced from Monty and Julie Carlson's own plant. Our True to Type standard means you receive a verified division of the authentic 'Gray Wolf'.
