Description

Canada's Only Source for Hans Hansen's Fragrant Giant Tetraploid Exclusive

Hans Hansen introduced Hosta 'Hans Solo' in 2018 as a Plant Delights Nursery exclusive. It is a tetraploid cross of H. 'Liberty' and a tetraploid H. 'Royal Standard' — the extra set of chromosomes produces unusually thick, sturdy foliage with a presence that commands the shade garden. Leaves are dark green, broadly ovate, and enormous at 33 cm (13") long × 20 cm (8") wide, forming a giant clump 100 cm (39") tall and 195 cm (77") wide. In late July through August, 165 cm (65") spikes carry deliciously fragrant light lavender flowers above the canopy. Hosta Choice Gardens is the only Canadian nursery offering this rare Hansen exclusive.

Deliciously fragrant blooms: Inheriting its fragrance from the tetraploid H. 'Royal Standard' parent, 'Hans Solo' produces light lavender flowers on sturdy 165 cm (65") scapes in late July through August — a rare trait in a giant dark green hosta.
Tetraploid vigour and substance: The extra set of chromosomes (4-4-4 suggested ploidy) produces exceptionally thick, heavy foliage with a structural presence and slug resistance that diploid hostas rarely match at this scale.
Giant architectural scale: Forms a commanding clump 100 cm (39") tall and 195 cm (77") wide with enormous 33 × 20 cm (13 × 8") dark green leaves — a true landscape anchor for large shade borders.
Liberty × Royal Standard heritage: Combines H. 'Liberty's bold large-leaf character with the fragrance and vigour of a tetraploid H. 'Royal Standard', producing a cultivar that is genuinely greater than the sum of its parts.
Exclusive Canadian availability: 'Hans Solo' is a 2018 Plant Delights Nursery exclusive sourced directly from Plant Delights — never available through any other Canadian hosta nursery and a genuine collector's opportunity.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	100 cm × 195 cm (39" × 77")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Dark green; light lavender fragrant flowers
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Hans Solo' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and its giant tetraploid form thrives with the deep, fertile soil and generous moisture that our longer Canadian vernalization period rewards so well — give it room to reach its full 195 cm (77") spread and site it where those fragrant late-summer blooms can be appreciated up close. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Hans Hansen exclusive, sourced directly from Plant Delights Nursery — confirmed before it leaves Bécancour, QC.
