Description

An Intensely Blue Giant That Holds the Night Colour Deep into Summer

Dick and Jane Ward registered Hosta 'Midnight Hour' in 2009 from an original seedling of unknown parentage. The nearly round, rounded-base leaves are an intense blue-green with a dull, waxy surface and intensely corrugated texture that deepens with age. Fourteen vein pairs give the foliage a bold, architectural presence, and slightly rippled margins add a refined finishing detail. At 91 cm (36") tall and 137 cm (54") wide, it forms a commanding large mound with a moderate growth rate. It grows reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9 and is notably prolific in flower production.

Intensely Blue Corrugated Foliage: The nearly round leaves carry an intense blue-green colour with a heavy dull wax coating and deep corrugation that becomes more pronounced and impressive as the plant matures over successive seasons.
Large Commanding Scale: Reaches 91 cm (36") tall and 137 cm (54") wide at maturity, forming a bold architectural mound with 14 vein pairs and slightly rippled margins that anchor large shade borders with authority.
Prolific Near-White Flower Display: Green scapes reaching 96 cm (38") carry an exceptional abundance of near-white tubular flowers in July — one of the most floriferous large blue hostas available.
Greens Up Later in Season: The intense blue-green colour holds deep into summer before gradually greening up, giving 'Midnight Hour' a longer blue display period than many comparable large blue hostas.
Sets Viable Seeds: Produces green seed pods with viable seeds, making it a valuable parent plant for hybridizers and an added point of interest for serious collectors.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	91 cm × 137 cm (36" × 54")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Intensely blue-green (greens up later); near-white flowers
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Midnight Hour' holds its intense blue-green colour deep into the Canadian summer before gradually greening up — it handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9 and its large commanding presence is perfectly suited to the sweeping shaded borders of the Rideau Valley where a prolific-flowering blue giant like this becomes the centrepiece of the garden in July. We grow it at our nursery in Bécancour, QC and verify the intense corrugation and blue colouring before every plant ships. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Dick and Jane Ward selection, confirmed before it leaves Bécancour.
