Description

A Majestic Voyage for Your Shade Garden

Hosta 'Viking Ship' is one of the true giants of the hosta world, bred by hybridizer Ray Wiegand for gardeners who want commanding scale and architectural presence. It forms a massive vase-like mound of deeply cupped, heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with a glaucous waxy bloom that holds its cool tone through the season. It performs reliably across Canadian hardiness zones 3 through 9 and may take up to six seasons to reach its full Viking stature — but the reward is well worth the wait. Plant it as a bold focal point or to anchor the back of a large shaded border.

Size: 71–91 cm (28–36") tall × 152–183 cm (60–72") wide at full maturity — a true landscape giant.
Corrugation: Heavy, leathery leaves with deep veins and a distinct cupped shape that catches morning rain and dew beautifully.
Colour: Deep blue-green foliage with a glaucous waxy bloom that gives a cool, dignified hue all season.
Slug Resistance: Heavy leaf substance provides exceptional durability and natural resistance to slugs and common garden pests.
Flowers: Pale lavender blooms in mid-summer on tall scapes above the cupped canopy.
Hardiness: Zones 3–9 — reliably cold-hardy across Canada.

Feature	Specification
Size (H × W)	71–91 cm × 152–183 cm (28–36" × 60–72")
Hardiness Zone	3–9
Colour	Deep blue-green with glaucous waxy bloom
Light Requirements	Partial to full shade

Grower's Tip: 'Viking Ship' handles Canadian winters with ease from Zone 3 through 9, and patience is rewarded — each season the mound grows more commanding than the last. At our nursery in Bécancour, QC, we wait for every plant to fully emerge and show its strong cupped foliage before shipping. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Ray Wiegand selection.
