Collector-Grade Hostas from One of North America's Most Inventive Hybridizers
Don Dean is a Minnesota-based hybridizer whose work spans decades of patient selection and bold experimentation. His cultivars are known for exceptional leaf substance, dramatic texture, and a colour range that moves from deep sapphire blues to luminous golds, warm ambers, and vivid variegated contrasts. Every plant in this collection is grown True to Type at our Bécancour, QC trial fields and selected for performance across Canadian hardiness zones 3–9. Where available, we source directly from originator stock — and actively seek it out as new divisions become accessible.
- Extraordinary Texture: From the prehistoric corrugation of 'Deep Waters' and 'Crinkled Leather' to the pie-crusted margins of 'Celtic Dancer', Don Dean's hostas reward close inspection at every scale.
- Bold Colour Range: Intense glaucous blues ('Best Friend', 'Country Dreaming', 'Astral Bliss'), luminous golds ('Soul Shine', 'Blood, Sweat and Tears'), vivid variegation ('Riviera Sunset', 'Bedazzled', 'Louie Louie') — there is a Dean cultivar for every palette.
- Architectural Habit: Many Dean introductions feature a distinctive upright, vase-shaped silhouette — 'Deep Waters', 'Country Warrior', 'Celtic Uplands' — making them natural focal points in the shade garden.
- Proven Canadian Hardiness: All cultivars in this collection are rated for zones 3–9 and have been trialled in Bécancour's continental climate before being offered for sale.
- Collector Depth: With over 25 cultivars represented — from compact gems like 'Sterling Medallion' and 'Clown's Collar' to giants like 'Country Melody' (132 cm wide) — this collection suits beginners and serious collectors alike.
Grower's Note: Don Dean's hostas are not widely distributed in Canada. We prioritize originator stock whenever it becomes available, and actively pursue new sources to maintain the highest standard of genetic fidelity. If a cultivar shows as unavailable, contact us to reserve a future division.
