Some hybridizers come to hostas through horticulture. Doug Beilstein came through dentistry, blueberries, and an insatiable curiosity that, once ignited, could not be contained.

The Man Behind the Collection

Doug Beilstein grew up in Mansfield, Ohio, where his love of plants first took root during his high school years working at Kingwood Center. He went on to study at The Ohio State University, graduating in dentistry in 1973 and founding his own practice shortly thereafter. But the garden was always calling.

In 1985, Doug and his brother Steve opened the Blueberry Patch in Lexington, Ohio — a farm that soon expanded into perennials. It was there that Doug met Van Wade of Wade & Gatton Nurseries, a man whose deep knowledge of hostas and horticulture opened a door that Doug would walk through for the rest of his life.

What began as mail-ordering interesting varieties quickly became something far more serious. Once Doug had accumulated over a thousand different kinds, he asked himself the question that defines every true hybridizer: there has to be more to this. So he started growing from seed.

60,000 Seeds a Year

Today, Doug plants an estimated 60,000 hosta seeds per year across a 1.5-acre garden and extensive raised beds in his Mansfield backyard — a property he has expanded over the years to include covered growing houses and even a bridge spanning a ravine, built simply to access more planting space.

Most of those seedlings are discarded. Doug is looking for the exceptional — the plant that stops him in his tracks. “If it’s pleasing to my eye, it makes the cut,” he says. Some cultivars take up to ten years to mature before he is satisfied. Every plant is tracked meticulously with spreadsheets and coded photographs. “Thank God for spreadsheets,” he laughs.

When Doug retired from dentistry around six years ago, he didn’t slow down — he scaled up. More seeds, more pots, more beds, a website, and the relentless pursuit of the next great hosta. He sells seed varieties through his website, though he is quick to point out that profit was never the point. “It’s a rather fun thing for me to do,” he says.

A Family Affair

Doug’s wife Mardy is very much part of the story. She works alongside him in the garden — pulling weeds, keeping things in order, and doing something perhaps even more important: helping to name the hostas that make the cut. Together, Doug and Mardy travel each year to American Hosta Society (AHS) conferences, where they explore new hybrids, connect with fellow enthusiasts, and stay at the forefront of the hosta world.

In the “family plot” on the side of their Mansfield home, a number of Beilstein hostas bear the names of family members — some with inside jokes woven quietly into the cultivar name. “Naming them is part of the fun,” says Doug. It is a reminder that behind every great hosta introduction is not just a hybridizer, but a life fully and joyfully lived around these plants.

What to Expect from a Beilstein Hosta

Doug’s eye is drawn to the full spectrum of what hostas can offer — size, leaf shape, puckering, venation, the subtle gradations of blue and green, and the interplay of margins and centres. His introductions reflect a hybridizer who has seen tens of thousands of seedlings and knows exactly what extraordinary looks like.

Every Beilstein hosta in our collection has been grown true to type at our nursery in Bécancour, QC, and verified before shipping. When you plant a Beilstein introduction, you are planting the result of decades of patience, science, and genuine passion for one of the garden world’s most remarkable plants.
